What is Gone and Still Here

About This Art Piece: The Artist’s Statement
I wanted to depict the tragedy of a pair of loving couples separated by life and death: the woman still feeling the kiss on her face though the man is already gone. Love stories have always been the most meaningful throughout time, and to me, a love story between the living and the dead stands out the most. Love serves as a beautiful reminder to draw in viewers to the importance of Remembrance Day. The painting resembles the loss between the lovers, what their sacrifice has meant for us, the peaceful life that comes at a cost. We are all like the woman in this art piece. The reason we could have a peaceful life now is built on the sacrifices of others.
I thought about past wars that happened in our world, soldiers who never returned home, and the nurses who saved lives. There are war survivors who lost friends and partners forever. Personal tragedies inspired me to create this art piece. I painted my work for a single purpose: a reminder of the sacrifice by these brave soldiers.
I enjoyed rendering the soldier so that he looks broken and rough. Since he went through a war, I imagined that his clothing would be worn, his armor would be dirty and muddy; his wounds would heal while some would not. The whole process involved “scrubbing” the body of the soldier, using splats of paint and the best part is that I don't have to worry how rough it looks, the more wear the better.
