Tom Thomson's Ragged Lake

$0.00

By Annabelle Zhang, Grade 11

About This Art Piece: The Artist’s Statement

I'd be happy if people could--- through my lino carving--- feel the same feeling that I felt when I saw Tom Thomson's piece for the first time and even maybe recognize this distinct artstyle to be from a member of the Group of Seven. I feel patriotic towards Canada when reminded that we have done something significant in the art scene and especially more patriotic regarding recent matters, so as an artist it would be cool if I could be able to somewhat contribute to this country and also influence others to do so as well.

The inspiration stemmed from an admiration of the Group of Seven--- especially Tom Thomson's work and art style. I especially admired the composition, colours, and just overall style of his pieces so I chose one to carve into lino print. Ragged Lake striked me as special because of how interesting of a shape the pools of water were, so I chose it and during the making I was super mindful of putting an emphasis on the shape of the lake while carving as well.

The process: Carving on lino boards was such a fun and interesting idea at first, I decided to choose something very hard and time-consuming for myself. I had sketched and painted in duochrome to set the premise for what I needed to carve out and what needed to stay. This piece was inspired by stamp carving videos I watched online. I thought lino print would be a similar process, however, it turns out it was not quite the same. Around three or four hours were spent preparing the carving before I began. The actual carving process was long and laborious. The board was harder than I thought and I had made my sketches too detailed for the carving tools, but nonetheless I tried my best. I spent at least 10 hours carving everything out, during class and my free time, my hands were sore and dirty, but alas! I finished it and I was happy with the result!
