Blooming Hydrangeas
By Vicky Yao, Grade 10
About This Art Piece: The Artist’s Statement
This art piece has a cool tone to it, presenting itself as calming. Its theme is primarily floral with abstract elements, such as the paint splatters in the background. The main message conveyed through this art piece is the beauty of nature and God's creation, and how different elements of nature, in this case flowers and bees, work together to produce wonderful results.
I was inspired to create this art piece because I enjoy painting flowers, especially watercolour ones. This project not only gave me an opportunity to practice and improve my watercolour skills; it also gave me some creativity in choosing what flower to paint. I chose to paint hydrangeas because they're one of my favourite flowers and I prefer to paint with cool colours such as blue, purple, and green.
The process: I enjoyed painting the hydrangeas the most. Using different tints and shades of blue and purple as well as changing between dark and light values was something I enjoyed working with. Hydrangeas are shaped as clusters of small flowers, and my painting process involved detailing each individual flower. Doing so took time, but the outcome was worth it.
